Dear Centennial Cub and Parents,
This is going to be a very exciting year for your child. Your child will have block classes, much like middle school. I will be the reading teacher. Each block will be approximately 70 minutes long. We will work closely with one another to ensure that your child's needs are being met in every way.
Last year our district adopted a new reading/writing curriculum called ReadyGEN. This curriculum has a balance of literary (fiction) and informational (nonfiction) texts which will facilitate students' learning of vocabulary and foundational (phonics, decoding, word) skills. The carefully selected texts will also deepen content knowledge and build comprehension skills.
My reading block will be spent teaching a whole group lesson focusing on specific third grade standards. There will also be time at the end of class for self-selected independent reading and Accelerated Reader while I teach small groups. There will be a variety of assessments given throughout the year to help up pinpoint the needs of your child. Myself or your child's homeroom teacher will share the results with you so that you will know how to support your child at home.
Please encourage your child to read 20 minutes daily at home and encourage your child to meet or exceed the AR goal of one point per week.
I am excited to be one of your child's teachers this year!
